A large prickly pear cactus spine makes the best needle. It's softer than the 78 rpm records strong but flexible. On these photographs the steel needles need to be replaced ideally every 1 to 3 plays. The 78s were made from shellac and clay and are harder than the steel needles so the needle tip grinds down and can damage the record grooves.

Great restoration! My first job was in a golf pro shop at a country club when I was 14 and the boss there had a national cash register similar to this but without the hand crank. His was a little bigger and was the type you wind up like a clock. To complete the transaction and print the receipt, you’d push a button and the machine would spring into action. He often had to spend hundreds of dollars to get the thing fixed for various reasons, but the worst was when one of the staff accidentally pushed two adjacent number keys at the same time, causing it to jam. I still remember the funky rhythm that machine made.

Alot of the times that it is hard to wind or the return speed is slow is the old oil used to coat the gears and spring its an old whale oil based lubricant and prone to degradation and becoming sticky over time a good alcohol scrub and a new machine oil will solve most simple lubricant based issues on old machines like these or sewing machines

There is a really cool electric amplifier that was available for these. But, it doesn't run on electricity, it runs on air. You put on the reproducer which has an air line running off to the pump. There are air powered victrolas as well. Victor produced a model for outdoor use which had the equivalent of a 100 watt amplifier with air. They are incredibly effective. That 15 Dollar price is officially 401 Dollars today. But there is whole lot of BS in the long term inflation numbers. Using Gold as the benchmark, it's more like 1500 using today's money.

I had a predecessor of this NCR unit, back in the early 70's. It had 4 cash drawers and was a pinchbar model. I sold it at auction in 1978 for $650.⁰⁰ at Hovmand Galleries in Winnipeg. The original dry goods store that used the cash register was G&E Cash Store in Lundar, MB

Can I ask a few questions about your register? I just bought a similar one. 1923 model 852-E. Where can I get the receipt paper and do you know the specs on the milkglass part? That's missing. It seems like it only has a single hole in the center of the milkglass, not like many registers that has two holes for mounting. Thanks so much and thanks for the great videos. You taught me a lot about my register.

Really GREAT ! You did an awesome job ! Try and get an OLDER Victor record to enjoy the results of your superb restoration,the grooves are different,you will experience much better sound. Look for a Victor record with the BIG label on it,and only one song on each side....

11:22 It was best practice to start with the largest coin first. Fifty cent piece, quarter, nickel, penny. I made change in the olden days. It was a full service gas station though, not a grocery store.

The "Chrome" plating is NOT Chrome. - Chrome plating was not invented till the 1920's or 30's. That is NICKEL Plated. In truth - "Chrome" plating is actually nickel plated FIRST, then the chrome is applied OVER the nickel to protect the nickel. Personally, I think the bare Nickel has a beautiful warmth that chrome takes away. Any good chrome shop can do it. Nice restoration - glad you didn't overdo it like so many do!

Just want to point out that when that was made a dark paste filler was rubbed into the open grain and lightly sanded off to produce a flat surface and enhance the grain before an actual oil varnish was used. No filler and poly is the standard of modern crappy finishes on antiques made of oak.

I’m sure you’ve seen comments already that you shouldn’t use polyurethane on these machines, rather, you should use a shellac. Yes, bees wax is the correct material to seal the gasket. There are also rebuild kits available for these reproducers too. Be careful with the bearings that are in the tips of the governor as they are easy to lose, and hard to replace if lost!

Fake sound at the end, you can't play a 33rpm vinyl on a 78rpm gramophon. Speeds are different and grooves are not the same.
